Indiana's Wound Care

We have created this page to show the progression of our dog Indiana's wound care from a burst sarcoma tumor.  In 48 hours, the tumor tripled in size, and within another 48, it had quintupled.  Due to her advanced age and complicated health history, we were left with no traditional methods of treating the tumor, such as surgery or chemotherapy.

We currently are treating the cancer with an experimental drug.  We will talk more about that when we are able.  We are also treating the wound with Manuka honey, in hopes of preventing infection and encouraging new skin growth.

***WARNING*** These pictures are very graphic, which is why we are not publicly publishing this webpage.  Please view these pictures with discretion.  If you are easily upset, you way want to follow along on Jen's blog at www.thingsivelearnedfrommydog.blogspot.com instead.  The blog will talk about the same things but will not feature graphic photos.

Picture
Monday, November 14, 2011 The tumor is not at its largest yet.
Picture
Friday, November 18, 2011 Now the tumor has burst, and the skin is sloughing off between the dead and live skin barrier.
Picture
Saturday, November 19 The tumor is largely exposed, and the flap of skin is hanging on by just a few threads.
Picture
Sunday, November 20, 2011 The skin has now fallen off the tumor, and there is considerably less blood than earlier in the week. The tumor, which at its largest was grapefruit-sized, is now the size of a kiwi. It is visible at the bottom of the wound.

Sunday, November 20, 2011 This is the same day as the previous picture, but only about 8 hours later!

Monday, November 21, 2011 This picture was taken on the same day but it a close up of the cancerous tissue.

Thursday, November 24, 2011 Note that there is little cancerous tissue visible, and the edges of the wound have begun to heal.

Monday, November 28, 2011 I know you have no frame of reference, but doesn't it look considerably smaller?

Tuesday, November 29, 2011 This is a good picure! Look how much smaller the wound looks now. Our vet thinks we'll only be doing wound care for about another week!
